I love a backyard wedding.
My parents were married in their backyard. I have photographed many backyard weddings and I have photographed at gorgeous venues. But there is something very nostalgic, backyard bonfire-y, grabbing-a-drink-from-the-basement, private quiet convos in the kitchen vibes that are always there when you are in the intimate setting of someone’s uniquely curated home and yard.
And Lainey + Grey’s wedding felt just like that.
Grey’s parents completely remodeled their yard the months leading up to their son’s wedding. Two of their daughters were married in that same yard within the year and you can feel the love and effort when you look around.
The couple got married at Clinton Town Beach in Clinton, Connecticut. And it was so beautiful. The public beach area that they chose overlooked the water behind them as the wind blew through their hair on a warm, sunny October day.
I have talked about this ad nauseam – but Connecticut has so many little spaces and nooks to get married on the coast to discover. The couple’s day was full of craftiness. The bride and her mother-in-law planned it all. The bride did her own hair. The bride’s best friend did all of the florals. The groom’s father officiated. The groom’s sister sang along acoustic guitar during the ceremony. The groom’s mother made the cake. And their whole day was set between the beachside of Clinton and the backyard of the groom’s childhood home.
Connecticut beach weddings have so much potential to feel elite and coastal while remaining homey and intimate without the chaos of a nearby city or skyscraper hotels – it’s really something special.
Lainey and Grey are a photographer/videographer duo so they appreciated and encouraged any artistic vision or freedom I wanted to try (see the shutter drag here).
A backyard wedding like theirs shows that with a strong creative vision, a team effort and authentic touches, it can be even more special than perhaps a venue or somewhere with more constrictions.
