NYC FIDI ENGAGEMENT PICS
PIER 17 NYC COUPLES SESSION:
ideas for your engagement shoot IN NYC
Emily and Tim opted for an engagement session in the area that they call home – the Financial District (FiDi) in NYC. And although on the surface it sounds like a corporate area full of sky scrapers, it’s riverside piers and developments make it a diverse area to use for engagement photos in New York City. The area we used, Pier 17 and the surrounding areas, overlooks the East River and Brooklyn Bridge and had featured a 2024 art exhibit, “Sea Idylls” featuring surrealist, life-like sculptures by artist Carol Feuerman. We started early morning to assure some yummy light, but also fewer crowds that inevitably began to occupy the area because – guys – it’s such a cool spot!!

An engagement shoot near Pier 17 in the Financial District of NYC offers an incredible mix of waterfront views, urban architecture, and historic charm—all with a lively, modern atmosphere. You’ll have a range of backdrops to work with, from the stunning skyline to the cobblestone streets nearby. Here’s what to expect for your session:

River + Brooklyn Bridge Views
Pier 17 offers perfect views of the Brooklyn Bridge, making it a prime location for dramatic shots with the bridge in the background, especially during golden hour when the light hits just right. You’ll also get breathtaking views of the East River and the Manhattan skyline. It really gives your photos and the feel of the whole shoot an expansive, yet romantic feel. The modern, open feel of Pier 17 is perfect for couples who love a sleek, contemporary setting. The clean lines and vibrant atmosphere add a trendy edge to your photos.

Historic Feel in the Area
Just a short walk away, South Street Seaport gives you a more historic, vintage vibe with its cobblestone streets and preserved 19th-century architecture. This part of the Financial District is ideal for more intimate, rustic shots, with its charming buildings and classic NYC character. The surrounding area is full of iconic NYC architecture—old brick buildings, gritty streets, and the historical 1885 sailing Wavertree Ship that adds a cool visual contrast between historical transportation and modern buildings.

What to Expect
Expect the lively energy of NYC — tourists, street vendors, and people coming and going — which can add an extra layer of excitement and authenticity to your shots. You’ll have plenty of opportunities for candid, street-style photos, especially near the piers and on nearby streets. I love documenting the more edgy side of NYC with street scenes, like walking the streets, sitting on the steps of Pier 17, leaning against a cool building in the Seaport district, or posing near the hustle and bustle of the piers.

Time of the Photoshoot
If you time it right, Pier 17 and the surrounding areas are perfect for sunrise or sunset shots, with the soft light illuminating the water and cityscape. Mornings are ideal – not only for great, soft light – but also to avoid too many people using the same area. It is a busy, bustling city after all! So any way we can reduce crowds will help the experience feel more comfortable. As the sun sets, Pier 17 comes alive with twinkling lights, offering beautiful night shots with the skyline and bridges lit up in the background. This is also a great time of day option if you like more artistic, blurred or moody imagery for your engagement session.

Adding the Personal:
If you want a more personalized touch to your photos, consider bringing along props like sunglasses, bicycles, scarves, hats or accessory coats that can be taken off or added back in for different feels. The area has mix of modern and historical settings that gives you flexibility to get creative.

Here’s how to prepare for a NYC engagement shoot:
Travel Time:
NYC can be busy, and locations can be spread out, so pick spots that flow well together if you want to hit multiple places. For example, Pier 17 and South Street Seaport are close, while a more extensive shoot might take you to places like Central Park, DUMBO, and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Weather Backup:
NYC weather can be unpredictable, so have an indoor backup in case of rain. You could shoot inside a cool café, art gallery, or vintage bookstore.
Outfits:
Wear outfits that complement each other without being too “matchy-matchy.” A good rule is to go with colors that look good together and suit the NYC backdrop (think neutral tones, earthy hues, or bolder colors if you want to stand out against the city).
Comfort is Key:
You’ll likely be walking a lot, so wear shoes that are comfortable yet stylish. Consider sneakers or low heels if you’ll be walking or standing for long periods.
Layers and Accessories:
NYC can be cool in the evenings, even in summer, so bring a jacket, scarf, or sweater for variety in your photos. Hats, sunglasses, and statement jewelry can add personality to your look.
Go with the Flow:
Be open to serendipity — sometimes the best shots happen when you least expect them. Embrace the random moments in the city, like catching the subway, stopping for street food, or hanging out in a random alley.

Lastly, guys – have some funnnnnnn!! Get a little silly, hug each other, laugh, or jump in the air! Fun, playful photos will add a layer of personality to your session and reflect your true dynamic as a couple. It is unrealistic to think your hair is going to stay perfect and polished with the wind tunnels streets and off-shore winds in the city. If you know you will constantly be adjusting your hair or clothes, choose a different look.
