Hartford Cocktail Parlour: Helena + Joe | Britt Hill Photo
Helena and Joe made a choice that more couples are starting to consider—separating their wedding photos from their actual wedding day. Instead of trying to fit everything into one timeline, they planned a dedicated session ahead of their informal celebration. It gave them space to slow down, be present, and approach their photos without distraction. As a Connecticut elopement photographer, this kind of flexibility always stands out. It shifts the focus back to the experience rather than the schedule.
We started their session dressed formally, leaning into a more classic, polished look. Then halfway through, they changed into something more relaxed, which gave the second half of their Connecticut elopement photos a completely different feel. Having that contrast built into one session made the gallery feel more complete—structured but still personal.
Their session took place on Pratt Street in downtown Hartford, with time spent both outside and inside The Hartford Cocktail Parlour. Pratt Street is a compact, walkable area that works especially well for Connecticut engagement photos, offering a mix of brick storefronts and subtle city texture without needing multiple locations. Inside The Hartford Cocktail Parlour, the tone shifts completely—dark green accents, leather booths, and warm, low lighting create a more intimate, moody atmosphere. Moving between the two gave the session variety while keeping everything easy and cohesive.
Taking wedding photos in downtown Hartford ahead of the wedding also gave Helena and Joe more room to be playful and creative in front of the camera. Without the pressure of a wedding day timeline, they were able to lean into movement, try different ideas, and show a lighter, more expressive side of themselves—things that often get rushed or skipped on the actual wedding day.
This kind of setup works especially well for couples planning a Hartford CT elopement or looking for something a little different from a traditional outdoor-only session. It allows for variety while still staying grounded in one location, and it naturally supports a more relaxed, less staged experience.
By the end of the session, Helena and Joe had a set of images that reflected both sides of how they wanted to show up—more formal and more laid-back. Separating their photos from their wedding day gave them the space to do that intentionally, and it shows in how natural everything feels.
