Stamford, Connecticut Backyard Wedding: Kelsey + Alexa | Britt Hill Photo
Kelsey and Alexa’s Connecticut backyard wedding felt like an extension of who they are—open, grounded, and completely centered on their people. They hosted at Kelsey’s grandmother’s home, transforming the backyard into a tented space that still held onto all the character of the property. Just beyond the tent sits a small pond, home to a group of ducks that have basically become pets to Kelsey’s uncles (something the cousins poked fun at but you can sense they felt the same). It’s the kind of place that already carries meaning, which made it the right setting for a day that was never about production—it was about connection.
From the start, it was clear that family and friendship sit at the center of their world. Kelsey and Alexa didn’t move through the day as hosts managing an event—they were fully part of it. Hugging, kissing, joking, pulling people onto the dance floor, checking in with everyone. The energy was constant and mutual. Their guests showed up the same way for them, and the result felt less like a traditional wedding and more like a shared experience across a really tight-knit group.
The structure of the day supported that. Guests mingled throughout the yard, moving between tables under the tent and gathering in smaller groups without feeling locked into one place. A food truck handled dinner, keeping things flexible and low-pressure, and later in the night, a classic ice cream truck rolled in for dessert. It was simple, familiar, and fun—exactly in line with the tone of the day.
It rained for most of the wedding. A steady, heavy rain that could have easily shifted the mood, but didn’t. If anything, it made things feel more intentional. Puddles collected, umbrellas passed around as needed, people packed a little closer together, the dance floor staying full all night—no one let it slow anything down. It became part of the atmosphere rather than something to work around.
As a Connecticut wedding photographer focused on nontraditional weddings, this is the kind of day that stands out. There’s no separation between the couple and their guests, no pressure to perform or follow a timeline that pulls people out of the moment. Kelsey and Alexa’s wedding wasn’t built around formalities—it was built around being present. And that’s exactly how it photographed.
This was also one of the first Connecticut lesbian wedding that I’ve documented, and it carried a level of openness that was felt in every part of the day. As an LGBTQ wedding, there was something especially powerful in how freely people expressed themselves—on the dance floor, during toasts, in the quieter in-between moments. Guests danced together, kissed their partners, laughed, cried, and didn’t hold back. The speeches reflected the same honesty—emotional, personal, and deeply connected to who Kelsey and Alexa are.
Toward the end of the night, their families surprised them with a life-size slideshow of video messages from friends and relatives. People shared what they love most about them and shared heartfelt reflections on the love they have for the couple. Kelsey’s grandmother appeared as well, speaking about her with so much pride and referencing Kelsey’s grandfather—how proud he would be of her. There wasn’t a dry eye among the 80-something people watching, standing and sitting close to each other in one big group as the sky fell dark with only their faces lit by the projector screen.
The entire day held a consistent feeling: good energy, emotional honesty and a lot of dancing. Even with the rain, nothing felt disrupted. If anything, it brought people closer into it.
For couples considering a Connecticut backyard wedding, especially those planning a lesbian wedding or LGBTQ wedding in Connecticut, this is a reminder that it doesn’t need to follow a traditional structure to be meaningful. It can be personal, flexible, a little unpredictable—and still feel complete. When the focus stays on your people and the things you already have, everything else tends to fall into place.
