Wrights Mill Farm Wedding: Katherine + Riley | Britt Hill Photo
Connecticut Wedding Venue
Katherine and Riley’s Wrights Mill Farm wedding in Canton, Connecticut is a great example of what relaxed wedding photography can look and feel like.
We first met a year before their wedding at RJ Julia Bookstore for engagement photos. We kept things simple, low-pressure, and natural which brought the best photos. That same approach carried into their wedding day: no over-posing and no long photo timelines – just space to be present with each other and the people they love while I document it.
K+R told me early on that they were not “photo people,” which is something I hear from a lot of couples planning Connecticut weddings. Usually I learn a part of that sentiment is not wanting their wedding day to feel like a photoshoot – and it shouldn’t! Weddings happen regardless if someone is there to photograph it. I respect that and document as if people didn’t know there would be a photographer there.
My approach to documentary wedding photography in Connecticut is built around that idea.
Instead of directing every moment, I photograph what’is already happening. The interactions, the energy, the honest moments that would exist whether a camera was there or not. This is often called photojournalistic wedding photography — capturing real moments as they unfold, rather than staging them.
For couples who feel awkward in front of the camera (hi, me too) this tends to be a much more comfortable experience. There’is no pressure to perform, pose perfectly, or “get it right.” You get to focus on your wedding day, and the photos reflect that honestly. For portraits, or the part of the day we take some photos around the grounds of just you two and your families, then direction and guidance will be given as needed.
Wrights Mill Farm is especially well-suited for this kind of relaxed Connecticut wedding environment. The setting is open and inviting, with a natural flow between spaces, which allows the day to unfold without feeling rigid or overly scheduled.
I cannot say enough how freaking cool their ceremony space is. I think it is my favorite of any one that I have shot in. It’is surrounded by trees making for great light no matter the time of day, it’is built into the woods vs just being up against the woodsy backdrop and it can be captured from higher perspectives which gives this intimate, fresh perspective with everyone in the shot.
If you’are searching for a Connecticut wedding photographer and you’are drawn to work that feels natural, artful, and rooted in honest organic moments, this is what it can look like. You do not need to be “good at photos” or feel completely comfortable in front of a camera.
You just need to show up as you are xoxo
