Modern and Stylish Bride Portraits at Okay Island, Sterling, Connecticut
A modern and feminine creative shoot with wedding professionals in Connecticut at the new wedding venue Okay Island in Sterling, Connecticut was just what was needed in the Spring of 2023. After a slow winter off-season and the early buddings of spring taking effect, it is the perfect time to start creating fresh and feminine looks for brides without the restrictions of keeping up with trends – creating for creativity’s sake!
The collaborative photoshoot was organized by Chelsea, the owner of Everthine Bridal Boutique in Madison, Connecticut who also provided all of the gowns featured at the shoot. Hair and makeup was tastefully done to match each dress look by owners Britt and Jess of Upstyle Co on site and florals were arranged and provided by florist Jakkelyn of Jakkelyn Iris and Marnie of Fern and Floral. The models, Michelle and Ruthie were so kind, easy to work with and creative in how they moved their bodies to show the best sides of these looks.
Although these are not “real” brides, I was able to photograph their looks freely and under the pressure of time constraints similar to a real wedding day. You have to be able to think quick on your feet and decide what move to make next having never met these individuals before or seeing the site or shadows of the space. It was so fun! And so exhilarating.
I think what is freeing about a shoot like this is that there are so many creative minds working their specialties in one setting – so the final product is insanely fun, unique, tasteful and feminine! I really feel that creativity and femininity are intertwined as it is a flow-state, going with our intuition and lots of movement, flex, change and adaptation.
The final photos are what your wedding photos can look like. They are soft, colorful, organic and fun. They lack stiffness, rigidity and the traditional poses that show little to no expression of a personality. Also, the editing you see here is a mix of color and black and white – emulating the emotions felt in film photography with gentle grain, softness of color and cinematic black and whites.
